Profile
A mysterious man invited by the El Camino Funeral Home. A great connoisseur of all knowledge. Zhongli doesn't blink when paying (or asking others to pay). You will gladly pay the price, no matter how unreasonable, and you will pay even more for the things you love. The fun part is that Zhongli always forgets to carry his money with him.
Appearance
Zhongli is a tall, thin man with fair skin and a stern expression. His eyes are bright and sharp, amber in color with bright yellow pupils set in the shape of diamonds. She wears red eyeliner on the lower lids of her eyes. When he uses his Geo abilities, his eyes turn luminescent. Her dark brown hair is styled in a windswept way with longer bangs hanging down the right side of her face. It fades to amber brown at the tips and is pulled back into a long ponytail that falls past your waist. When he uses his Geo abilities, his amber reflections glow. This appearance is also used in the depiction of Morax around Liyue in the Statues of The Seven.
His outfit is stylish and fitted, consisting of a beige dress shirt, brown and amber vest, slim black pants, black dress boots, and black gloves with silver archer rings cufflinks on the thumbs. His neck is a white tie held at the neck by an amber gemstone. Her left ear is adorned with a beaded tassel earring. Above all, he wears a long dark brown tailcoat with dragon scale patterns, gold and silver details, gold tassels and the Morax diamond symbol on the back. Zhongli's clothing is decorated with diamond symbols found on his sleeves, belt, pants, vest buttons, and tailcoat buttons. Similarly to Venti, because he was an Archon with innate Gnosis, the "Vision" embedded in his chain at the small of his back is nothing more than a fake.
Personality
Zhongli is a calm and kind man who knows a lot about the history and culture of Liyue. He has philosophical ideas about money and a great respect for Liyue traditions, even those that are long gone. He values contracts highly: despite having the fortune or the information, he tends to be humble and even a bit insecure about being, as he puts it, a "bourgeois parasite."
One of the most notable characteristics of Zhongli is its tendency to forget about the Blackberry in transactions, agreeing to spend large sums of money without having any Blackberry on hand and even taking "discounts" as granted despite being an obvious scam. She often ends up relying on others or El Camino Funeral Home for financial support. Although he is friends with Hu Tao, who trusts him the most, he does not like his childish behavior.
It is later revealed that Zhongli's carelessness stems from being Archon Geo and the creator of the Mora. With Gnosis allowing you to create unlimited Blackberry, you never had to worry about running out of money in your personal finances. Unfortunately, when he chose to live among mortals, he did not have the foresight to seek an alternative for mortals to continue to mint Mora in his absence, in addition to creating a retirement fund for him.
Zhongli, like Venti, seems to view his human form as separate from his divine form. The Petra Archaic set states that Rex Lapis was said to be a ruthless and emotionless god who slew countless other gods during the War of the Archons, as was necessary to fulfill a contract. As the God of Contracts, Zhongli takes contracts seriously and sincerely, as honoring an agreement is easy and he is perplexed as to how people are unable to comply with such a simple concept; it states that all those who break it will suffer the Wrath of the Rock. True to this, his Elemental Blast involves sending a meteor flying towards his enemies.
Zhongli cares deeply for his nation, although he risks endangering it due to his plan to resign as Archon Geo. His intention was to test Liyue to see if he was ready to pass into a new era without her presence, and he does so by faking his death during the annual Rite of Descent. He later clarifies, however, that if Liyue were in real danger, she would step in to stop him. He agrees with Keching's controversial opinion that Liyue is overly dependent on her Archon, and respects her for that reason. Highly intelligent and calculating, Zhongli accurately predicts Nobile's plans, and builds his test for Liyue entirely around the Herald.
Zhongli can be considered an open-minded person, since he invited Xinyan to perform at El Camino Funeral Home at a time when rock was not widely known or accepted in Liyue. Xinyan agreed, but when he found out that he was performing outside the hall, he thought the request was inappropriate, proving that Zhongli can be quite eccentric at times.
He dislikes shellfish, stating that it brings back bad memories of his time as Archon when he once fought smelly, tentacled sea monsters with great difficulty due to his stamina, small size, and abundance.
History
In traditional Liyue customs, "welcoming the Adeptus" and "dismissing the Adeptus" are equally important.
The Hu family, in charge of running El Camino Funeral Home for 77 generations, is the best at doing funerals. However, Hu Tao, the current director of El Camino Funeral Home, specializes in the art of firing mortals.
For this reason, for the various farewell ceremonies of the Adeptus, Hu Tao often uses the help of a friend who is in the same business as her: Zhongli.
The Adeptus have lived with the people of Liyue for millennia, but only a handful have ascended in the last three thousand years, which means that, currently, everything related to these traditions exists only in texts. It is not something that can be seen twice in life.
Not even the most demanding of researchers or academics could find an error in the ascension rites of El Camino Funeral Home.
Everything must be perfect: the wardrobe, the time, the place, the objects, the climate, the duration, the size of the audience allowed, the height, the profession and the age of said audience. Nothing can be overlooked.
When ordinary people describe Zhongli as a "claw encyclopedia", he smiles, sighs and says:
"I ... just have a good memory."
Character story 1
In Liyue, if someone is very fussy and inflexible about something they are passionate about, it is often said that that person is "peculiar."
In a way, everyone is peculiar. Some people hate spicy food or fish; others like their tofu to be tender and sweet ...
As for Zhongli, he is peculiar to everything.
Just enjoy the performances of the most famous artists, take the most exotic bird you have for a walk, and even often go into restaurant kitchens to teach chefs what is the right amount of fish and shrimp to make the dish. Most authentic Full Moon Egg.
Zhongli knows everything from everyday objects, such as clothing, to commerce, politics and relations between the Seven Nations, also passing through jewelry, ceramics, gastronomy, tea, incense, flowers, insects, birds ...
However, he usually just talks about things of no use, because he loves to share fun facts with other people.
Character story 2
To buy things, it is essential to negotiate.
This is a habit shared by all the citizens of Liyue.
No matter how high or inflexible the set price is, the best starting price is half price.
However, Zhongli never looks at the price. When you want something, you get it regardless of this factor, and sometimes you are even willing to overpay.
The funny thing is, he never remembers taking his purse with him. Therefore, he has friends who help him do his daily shopping. If something has a high price, you find all kinds of excuses to get reimbursed in some way.
For all the merchants who are satisfied with Zhongli, he has a unique quality: he fully understands the value of money and finances, as well as the suffering of people.
However, he fails to understand that poverty is a real thing. In other words, you cannot imagine yourself being poor.
How can such a person exist?
Character story 3
There is no way that Zhongli can starve.
Concerns like profit and loss are below your knowledge. The Seven Nations and the world itself is where your efforts are directed. As for wealth ... He is wealth itself.
He is Morax, the Lord Rex Lapis who rules Liyue, and the Archon Geo of the Seven Archons. The same money that circulates through Teyvat, Mora, bears his name.
When night falls and the bustling Liyue begins to sleep, he sometimes stands on top of the towering mountains and gazes at this city, which he built himself with his own hands.
Liyue, Rex Lapis has many divine titles.
When he established the laws of Liyue by his divine power, he was the God of Contracts. When he minted the first Mora and strengthened Liyue through trade, merchants revered him as the God of Commerce.
He has lived countless years and is the eldest of the Seven, which is why historians call him the God of History.
Thousands of years ago, the ancestors of the citizens of Liyue Port gathered stones to start fires and used stacked stones to create a stove. These blessings derived from the element Geo led Archon Geo to obtain the title of God of the stove.
People from other lands tend to call him Morax, although the people of Liyue prefer to use the term Rex Lapis.
But in the hearts of opera lovers and children, Morax's appearance on stage, the all-conquering defender of Liyue, the God of War, is the most fascinating.
The delicacies that Rex Lapis discovered lost in the streets, the plaques inscribed with his calligraphy, a famous opera that he once starred as a warrior ...
Many stories and tales of Liyue are, when closely studied, stories of people visited by their deity at some point, and the citizens of Liyue are very proud of that story.
Character story 4
As the founder of the Port of Liyue, "contracts" are the most important thing to Morax.
From the simple monetary exchange and the agreements between merchants to the ancient laws that Morax himself established, there is no part of the life of the city that is not affected by the "contracts".
For merchants, "contracts" are the most important standard that they maintain themselves: deadlines, invoices, shipping destinations ... Only a refined and strict order can sustain vibrant commerce, which is itself the lifeblood of business. Liyue port.
Thus, the Qixing incessantly punish violators of such laws, not only to uphold Morax's divine rules, but also to allow Liyue to maintain her vitality.
Over the millennia, each generation of the Liyue Qixing has made a commitment to interpret the law, including subtle amendments to fill in the loopholes found in the law. Traders consider the gaps left undiscovered to be "permissible if left unaddressed," and they kill those gaps until Liyue Qixing discovers and repairs them.
In the midst of this cat and mouse game, the book that compiles such amendments has reached a whopping 279 pages thick.
The person currently responsible for maintaining this book, Tianquan Ninguang, is secretly (and humorously) known as "Liyue's Tailor," in honor of his quickness in correcting these laws and his visual acuity.
But no matter how complicated or tangled the deadly laws become, one of these stands out above all the others in Rex Lapis's eyes.
"He who breaks his words will suffer the Wrath of the Rock."
Character story 5
Rex Lapis, the oldest of the Seven, has lived too long. Rex Lapis still remembers the moment when the final archon took his divine seat, thus ending the War of the Archons and the age of the gods at war. The Seven were a diverse group and spread far and wide, but all bore the burden of guiding humanity.
As time passed, many of the Seven's titles changed hands, and now none remain from the first Seven, except for Rex Lapis.
The second oldest was the carefree Barbatos, Archon Anemo.
When Barbatos first arrived in Liyue, Rex Lapis believed that this colleague had encountered a terrible crisis in the performance of his duties, which required his help.
So when Barbatos descended in a gust of wind, Archon Geo had already prepared to greet this neighboring deity and render whatever help he could. But as he watched, Archon Anemo tossed him a bottle of wine.
Here's some Mondstadt wine. Do you want to try it? Abandoning the duty of delivering a single bottle of wine, what an absurd idea!
However, Archon Anemo kept coming to visit, to explore Liyue Harbor, with all kinds of strange questions on his lips. Archon Anemo's questions knew limits as small as the wine in his hands.
From then on, the first Seven would meet often in Liyue. Rex Lapis still remembers how those wines tasted.
The world has changed a lot since then, and everything that was once familiar has faded from memory. All seven seats swapped and swapped again, until five of the seven at the table left.
The new archons would not fulfill the duty of guiding humanity either.
Even the hardest rocks can wear away after three thousand years.
Nor would the wind ever return.
One rainy day, the former ruler was strolling through Liyue Harbor and heard a merchant say to one of his workers: "You have finished your duties, go ahead and finish it."
He was in the middle of the crowd for a long time.
"Have I ... finished my homework yet?"
That which arises from the sea
During the Archon Wars, every corner of Teyvat was consumed by the fires of conflict. Not only did the gods fight each other, but countless evil things also sought to expand their domains.
One such creature type caused endless trouble for Archon Geo, long before he took that title along with his place among The Seven.
These hideous creatures, straight from the dark depths of the ocean abyss, had a squishy exterior and possessed agile tentacles that would live even after being severed, even secreting a thick, disgusting fluid in the process.
This alone would have been enough to make them the most monstrous of all creatures, and yet it was not the pinnacle of their monstrosity.
What made them really terrible was their small size, which gave them the ability to hide in unimaginably small nooks and crannies.
No space was too tight for them, not the wooden boards of the tables and chairs, not the seams of the windows and doors and the folds of the curtains, not even the books and brushes.
More than one poor soul, on at least one occasion, unknowingly reached out his hand, only to quickly retract it in horror with a blood-curdling scream at the sensation of something cold, damp and wet, as one or more of these despicable creatures came climbing down his arm, leaving a glowing trail behind them ...
At the urging of the Liyue people, Morax agreed to destroy these creatures. But these parasites of civilization could not be destroyed as enemies on a battlefield, simply by summoning a storm of stone spears that would tear the earth apart and beat the ground ...
Still, he was the God of Contracts. His word had to be their bond.
So, he wandered the village from house to house with stone prisons, grabbing these creatures one by one and locking them up forever ...
This long campaign of pest extermination taught Morax the true meaning of "a load lifted."
The grueling campaign itself, and the terrible smell of the secretions of those ocean creatures, left a lasting impression on the deity.
Today, even when he comes out incognito as the mortal man, Zhongli, Morax gives wide leeway to squirming and moving seafood.
... Well, except for dishes where such seafood has been sliced and diced into oblivion, such as seafood tofu. He will eat them happily.
Gnosis
Once the Farewell Rite, of which Zhongli was director and star, was finished, the omen of the Fatui, a woman named Signora, appeared before him.
By prior contract, she was here to claim the Gnosis from Archon Geo, Morax.
Before the Traveler and the two Fatui Heralds, Zhongli related the truth that he had entered into a contract with Archon Cryo. In his own words, this was his last "Contract to end all contracts".
However, no matter how you look at it, the loss of his divine ability to defend Liyue was too great a price to pay.
Even among mortals, the basis of a contract is the "equivalent exchange."
And for the God of Contracts, who has established countless agreements of this type in its long years of existence, such an important contract must have had its benefits.
Now, Archon Geo has given away his Gnosis as part of the deal.
So what must Archon Cryo have bet to balance the scales?
Birthday...
Happy Birthday. Here, this is a dried crystal lily flower that opened the day you were born. Long ago, the people of Liyue said that this flower contained the good memories and wishes of their land. I think your birth is also due to something similar.

Curiosities
- In the Teyvat - Liyue Travel Guide, the author, Alice, names Zhongli as her companion during her travels in this region.
- According to Xiangling, Zhongli's palate is very precise; he can tell the type of salt used in a dish just by tasting it.
- Zhongli's Chinese voice actor Bo Peng (彭博) is one of the directors of Genshin Impact's Chinese voice actors.
- Its title, "Vago Mundo", means "I wander around the world" in Latin.
- Zhongli bears a striking physical resemblance to the Avatar from A Post Honkai Odyssey in Honkai Impact 3rd, another of miHoYo's games.
Etymology
- Zhongli is probably named after Zhongli Quan (simplified Chinese: 钟离 权; traditional Chinese: 鍾離 權), one of the Eight Immortals, a group of eight legendary Xian (Chinese: 仙) in Taoist mythology.
- Zhongli Quan of the Eight Immortals possesses a magical fan that can bring the dead back to life, and he used alchemy to turn stones and base metals into gold to save the poor.
- In the Chinese version of Genshin Impact, the Adeptus are depicted as Xian.
- The first character of Zhongli's name in simplified Chinese, 钟, can cause a lot of ambiguity and confusion.钟 is the simplified form of two different traditional Chinese characters, 鍾 and 鐘, which have two different meanings.
- There is also a simplified Chinese character 锺 that can be used as the simplified form of 鍾 when used as a surname. This has only become an official simplified form for the last name in recent years, so it may not be commonly used. Strictly it should only be used for the surname "Zhong" (simplified Chinese: 钟 or 锺; traditional Chinese: 鍾).
- To make things even more confusing, in Taiwan and Singapore, a fourth Chinese character, 鈡, is occasionally used in place of 鍾 or 鐘.
- According to the official localization of your name in Traditional Chinese and Japanese, your name should be 鍾離. However, as a result of the above ambiguity, his name is sometimes incorrectly translated as 鐘離 even among Traditional Chinese players. The confusion can also come from the pun below.
- Both "Zhong" (simplified Chinese: 钟 or 锺; traditional Chinese: 鍾) and "Zhongli" (simplified Chinese: 钟离; traditional Chinese: 鍾離) exist as surnames in Chinese.
- The name "Zhongli" is a play on words that can mean that he is leaving his post as Rex Lapis. Zhong (Simplified Chinese: 钟; Traditional Chinese: 鍾) in Zhongli is homophone with the word "Clock" (Simplified Chinese: 钟; Traditional Chinese: 鐘) in Chinese and they are even spelled exactly the same way in Simplified Chinese. Li (simplified Chinese: 离; traditional Chinese: 離) is the common word for "Exit" or "Go". Therefore, the name can be interpreted as "After hours" or "Departure time".
- The Li (璃) in Liyue is a word for gemstone (usually referring to lapis lazuli) or glass. The word itself contains Zhongli li (离), with an extra radical to its left (𤣩). This radical resembles the word 王 wáng which means "King". The fact that Zhongli (离) leaves the 王 may be a symbol of his resignation from his reign over Liyue. This analysis only applies to the Simplified Chinese version of its name.
- This would also imply that Liyue's name has a secondary meaning: "The month of the king's departure", which bears a striking similarity to the pun on the name Zhongli ("Time of departure").
- Zhongli Li (Simplified Chinese: 离; Traditional Chinese: 離) was also used as the archaic form of 魑 chī which refers to a mythical creature, such as a mountain demon or a mountain beast, which may or may not be a cryptic statement alluding to Rex Lapis being an Adeptus.
